Don't know, tested with mawk and gawk.

Why not. I was very surprised not to find a decent means to have this
but to use an impossible separator.

Same here, that's why I had left then all over. I'm OK if you want me
to put them back. I removed them because I wanted to learn the pure
AWK style.
