configuring binutils

Hello,
Ran configure script for GNU binutils tool under Windows NT.Script appears
to have worked.
However,I observed a message "checking target system
type...powerpc_unknown-eabi".
A makefile file is generated in /tmp/build/binutils as well as a directory
powerpc-eabi which
is empty. Did the configure work?? If not,does anybody know why? Can I
proceed to
configure gdb and gcc without having succesfully configured binutils?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
