Well, actually, if you're moving up from binutils 2.8, you'll find
that you have bigger problems.  There was an assembler bug related
to global common symbols which resulted in bogus relocation addends
in 2.8 produced object files.

No alpha object file produced by <= 2.8 may be linked with >= 2.9. 

Moreover, I really consider the plt format change to be a bug fix.
It was silly of me not to have thought things through when first
designing the format, but I _did_ warn cgd about this needed change
almost 4 years ago.  I'm astonished that nothing at all has been
done to address this in the meantime.

I'm reluctant.  I'll let some other maintainer approve it or not.
