__gmon_start__ on Linux/Alpha

The linker emits the following error message

/usr/local/bin/ld:
warning: type and size of dynamic symbol `__gmon_start__' are not
defined

How significant is this "warning"? I did read the discussion
that happened in Feb 2001 on the glibc list which seemed to suggest
that a fix was put in elf32-ppc/sparc related files.

Can some one please say a few words on what I need to do to make the
linker happy?

Following is some relevant info about my Linux/Alpha box:

% ld -v
GNU ld version 2.11.90.0.1 (with BFD 2.11.90.0.1)
