Being new to hacking FSF software (not new to hacking *with* FSF
Software, though ;-), I do not even know what a copyright assignment is.
So: what do I have to do? What does my employer have to do?

Of course, since I'm modifying GPL software and my employer will ship
products based on this, my modifications fall under the GPL. There
should not be any problem.
