gas, solaris and shared libraries

Hopefully a simple question:
Is it possible to use "as" to compile shared libraries on solaris? Some
documentation suggests not and I'm getting a segmentation fault in a very
simple test case.

Details:
SunOS 5.5.1 Generic_103640-37 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-80
GNU C++ version 2.95.2 19991024 (release) (sparc-sun-solaris2.5.1) compiled
by GNU C version 2.95.2 19991024 (release).
GNU assembler version 2.11.2 (sparc-sun-solaris2.5.1) using BFD version
2.11.2
ld: Software Generation Utilities - Solaris/ELF (3.0)
Compilation flags: -v -I. -fPIC -ansi -Wall -Wno-return-type
-fwritable-strings
Flags when linking shared library: -shared -symbolic -Xlinker -z -Xlinker
defs -fPIC

Thanks,
Mark.
