Well, the big advantage of Maciej's scheme is the principle of having a
triplet which suffices to identify the ABI.  --with-abi is the
opposite: it gives you a mips64-unknown-linux-gnu-gcc compiler which
doesn't default to the normal settings for mips64-unknown-linux-gnu.

I think both have their uses.
