"make distclean" query

Subject: "make distclean" query

Hello

I notice that if I wish to run ./configure with different CFLAGS when
the cvs checkout has already been configured I get an error (see
attached log). The workaround is to delete config.status in each
sub-dir as well as doing make distclean. However, could "make
distclean" clean up in full?  Perhaps I am missing something, I've not
set maintainer mode (--enable-maintainer-mode), is it on by default on
CVS version?
