I have tested this patch on arm-none-linux-gnueabi with /bin/sh pointing

I'd also like to thank you Alan for fixing this, I was about to
try and track down this same exact problem as I've been seeing
this on Debian sparc boxes for a while.
I've verified your fix cures my problems too.
