Cross-Compiler Validation

I hope to have soon built my first gcc cross-compiler.
This is configured as host=sparc-sun-sunos4.1.3 & target=powerpc-unknown-eabi.
The target is actually a VME card running VxWorks.

What is the best way of validating the compiler and tools
that I have built? I know I could just get on with using
it but wondered if anyone out there has a recommended
compiler verification procedure or hints.
