   I have seen a few references to binutils-2.9.5.x.x ( binutils-2.9.5.0.22 and
   binutils-2.9.5.0.24) 

Those are GNU/Linux specific snapshots built from the binutils
development sources.  They are tested on GNU/Linux, but are not tested
for other purposes.  If you use them for a target other than
GNU/Linux, consider them to be untested along the lines of the
development sources, which can be found at
    http://sourceware.cygnus.com/binutils
