Oooh, interesting. Try switching to an earlier version of binutils. Easiest way to do this is to edit demo-i686.sh to use gcc-3.3.3 instead of gcc-3.4.0, since gcc-3.3.3-glibc-2.3.2.dat happens to use an older binutils.
