configure: error: compiler support for __thread is required

Build host/tools: Solaris 2.8/gcc 3.4.1/binutils 2.15

Target: ppc7400/Linux 2.6.7/glibc 2.3.3/linuxthread 2.3.3/gcc
3.4.1/binutils 2.15

During the build crosstool fails on this:

running configure fragment for sysdeps/powerpc/powerpc32/elf
running configure fragment for nptl/sysdeps/pthread
configure: error: compiler support for __thread is required

It seems to be related to
http://sources.redhat.com/ml/libc-alpha/2004-05/msg00008.html even if
the situation is a bit different as sparc64 is not the target here but
just the build host.

It is not clear from the thread what is the prefered way to fix/work
around this.

Any input greatly appreciated.

JC
