All, Thanks a lot for this valuable information. I discovered that to fix this problem of 'missing " ', both of the following steps are needed to build 0.43 on Ubuntu 8.10 i.e., 1. sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow dash and answering "No" to the question if you want to install dash as /bin/sh 2. sudo apt-get install texinfo On my machine I installed texinfo and it still failed with same error. Then I did step 1 above and it worked!
