Installing as service is quite hard without sysbash, so I put everything into the sysvinit file /etc/rc.0/init.d/postgresql:
start|stop|status|initdb|install|uninstall|startlocal|restart|condrestart

How does this work without logging into the system and starting a
cygwin shell?

Not at all.
My sysvinit init.d script was enhanced for the installation / uninstallation steps.
pg_ctl does almost the same, but without using cygrunsrv.

So it is not possible to run this as service? What is the problem with the method used in postgres 7? What is sysbash?
