Why the NO_AUTOPOINT=1?

Otherwise, you run into this problem with the very old autotools:

make[2]: *** No rule to make target 'Makevars', needed by 'Makefile'.  Stop.
[...]

Looks like this can also be fixed just by patching to add a copy of Makevars.tmpl as Makevars. Yaakov probably has a better idea than me about which is the better way to fix this.
