RE: Unable to run xfree86 on Windows NT 4.0 SP 6a?

I would really advice to install complete set of XFree86. On a Linux
machine you also need to install everything, except a few x clients.

It seems to be rgb.txt issue or the screen resolution. Please check mail
archive. It had been discussed several times.

Subject: Unable to run xfree86 on Windows NT 4.0 SP 6a?

I'm unable to successfully run xfree86 on a Windows NT system, although
the documentation indicates I should be able to do this.

The system has Windows NT 4.0 workstation, service pack 6a (which is
supposed to have DirectX 3.0).

I downloaded & installed cygwin 1.1.7 and xfree86 4.0 (I downloaded the
minimal set of xc-4-binaries, according to the doc). Did the setup as
the doc says.

However, when I attempt to run startxwin.bat, this happens:

In the window where XWin is running, the following appears:
    Couldn't open RGB_DB '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb'
    _XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
    pwin->width = 00000320
    pwin->height = 00000258
    pwin->paddedWidth = 00000640
    pwin->bitsPerPixel = 00000010
    calling winAllocateFramebufferMemory

and then a dialog box appears with

    Direct Draw Init Failed: Error = 88760078 (uknown error)

Does xfree86 require a later DirectX version? As far as I can tell 3.0
is the latest one available for NT.

Much thanks,

Denis Haskin
