Re: Stand-alone application

I'm the web page & FAQ maintainer :-] (as noted on the web page credits :] ).

I'm not suggesting you give up - I'm suggesting that _if you haven't run setup.exe_ that you _will need to do so_ before trying to
isolate the minimum install needed.

I'm sure it is possible to run a slim line install of cygwin. Equally I'm sure that it will require some registry entries (for the
mount table) and will likely require things like /etc/passwd to be present.

To re-iterate more clearly:
1) start with a clean pc.
2) install _all_ of cygwin. (well you can skip obvious things like gcc & squid).
3) install xfree86 as per Harold Hunt's howto (available via www.cygwin.com/xfree86).
4) when xfree86 is working... carry on
5) pick a package (or if you're into binary searchs, pick n/2 packages where n is the count of installed packages).
6) remove the package you selected by running setup again.
7) test xfree86. If it doesn't work, note the package you removed as a dependency for xfree86. If you remove a group, reinstall 1/2
of them and goto 7.
8) reinstall any dependencies, don't try removing these again. Goto 4.
