The old version didn't detect the color masks being used by your display, it
simply used the defaults that X's mi code decided to use. Of course, that
resulted in the colors being completely incorrect.
The new server must detect the color masks being used by your display so
that it can tell the X fb code which bits represent which colors in each
pixel.
I'm not sure why your machine won't return the color masks. There must
still be bugs in the mask detection code, but I don't have a machine that
mask detection fails on, so I really can't do much to debug the problem.
