Holger,
    As cygwin/XFree86 is a separate download to the cygwin runtime and
other packages, you will find the itemised download requirements listed
in the cygwin/XFree86 HOW-TO. The current discussion is over the amount
of cygwin runtime and related packages needed.

And Yes the font archive is big. At this point we are simply getting
XFree86 fully functional. I doubt the core developer have time or
motivation to build cut-down distributions. You are of course welcome to
join the project and offer your time to take the full tarballs and
provide a set of smaller tarballs allowing more precise downloads.
