error starting xfree

  I'm running a newly-installed xfree 4.0.3 and cygwin on top of 
Win98.  X won't start from either startxwin.bat (within Win98) 
or startx (within cygwin).  Here is my startxwin.bat:

start .\twm

Here are the error messages:

  The X window opens and closes immediately.  I could include the stackdump 
if it helps.

  Using startx I get the same, with a different error message:
