Chapter "Installing Cygwin/Xfree86" in "Cygwin/XFree86 User's Guide", 0.0.05 2001-07-03, dowloaded from http://xfree86.cygwin.com/docs/ug/cygwin-xfree-ug.pdf today, does not mention any interference with binary versus text mode. Nor does the README file in the binaries directory.
Chapter "3.2 Text and Binary Modes" in "Cygwin User's Guide", 20.1.0 1999-02-08, contains a discussion. No recommendation or requirement.
