It's a known issue. Please download either the new startup scripts or the
new XWin-Test42.exe from http://www.msu.edu/~huntharo/xwin/shadow. This
fix this one.

cygwin provides a nearly complete unix environment. For example the whole
xfree xserver uses a lot of unix functions, but can be compiled with little
changes (except the "display driver") with the cygwin unix layer.
So my suggestion to you is: Try compiling the program with cygwin and
check where (if any) errors occur. Unixcode that was written with
portability in mind is likely to compile without problems.
