How do you startup the XSession ?
As far as I know missing fonts doesn't cause the CDE window manager to fail.
It will just use a fallback font.
Are you using the -query HPhostname option to startup XWin ?

For every tool there are at least 2 uses: the one it was designed for
and the other for which it wasn't.
