I'm using cygwin to window into a Solaris box.
I have this setup on my desktop computer (Windows 2000) and it works fine.
I attempted to do the same thing on my laptop and it fails if I try to
bring up the "textedit" editor.
however it works for xterm, and some other applications.
I'm using startxwin.bat to startup the X-session.
it's doing a:
start XWin -multiwindow -clipboard
run xterm -s1 1000 -sb -rightbar -ms -red -fg yellow -bg black
-e /usr/bin/bash -l
the error I see is:

this also works someones and fails other times.
We've reloaded cygwin a couple times to make sure we had the latest
software.
