can't start with startx

I've tried to install the Xfree server on my cygwin installation
(uninstalled cygwin and reinstalled everything) and when I attempt to start
the server using startx, I get the following output.

When I try to start the server using startxwin.bat I only get a console
window.

Being a newbie, how do I begin to diagnose this problem?
