startx broken: cannot open display :0.0

Solution found!  Invalid $HOME/.Xauthority file.  I
was fooling around with the 'xauth' command and
noticed that the .Xauthority file had been created
around the time startx started failing.  Checked the
startx script and saw it was checking for .Xauthority,
exporting if it existed.  I probably generated a bad
one, which would explain the "No protocol specified".
