XWin.exe crashing at startup

I'm trying to start XWin.exe on a fresh cygwin install via startx and
am getting the following:
bash-3.2$ startx
xauth: creating new authority file /cygdrive/c/Users/anallen/.serverauth.4156
giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
After the "xauth" message, I get a frame of a window titled
"Cygwin/X:0.0" (but nothing in the window), the computer screen "greys
out", and a window pops up saying: "XWin.exe has stopped working.
Windows is checking for a solution to the problem... A problem caused
the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program
and notify you if a solution is available."
I'm running Windows Vista Enterprise Service Pack 1
