I had the same problem - coolview's text/binary handling broke (or
negatively enhanced) things here.
Put this in your .emacs file
(defun bash ()
(interactive)
(let ((binary-process-input t)
(binary-process-ouput nil))
(shell)))
and then run the function bash rather than shell. This works for me.
