bash accepts only 7-bit ASCII ??

Hello,

my bash input line seems to accept just characters in the range of 7-bit-ASCII. On a German keyboard I am not able to type any of the umlauts (äöü). Even on a UK based keyboeard layout I cannot enter letters like áÁéÉ (e.g. CTRL+ALT+A). Also the Windows direct input mode using ALT+0+ASCII-Code is not available. Just to mension: I have not .inputrc (mensioned in another thread with a similar problem) and I wonder wether there is any configuration possibility to make these characters available?

Greetings,
Jörg
