how to change fonts/color etc. for XWin?

Newbie question again:

Where can I change the background/font color
for XWin? I changed fonts/color, and it seemd that
it affected Cygwin shell, but CygXwin shell kept
its own original preference; yellow letters on black background.

How/where can I change it? I'd like to see white letters on
black background.

Thank you.

David
