If you don't have /etc/profile, something is seriously wrong with your
installation.  If you haven't yet created any files in the Cygwin tree, I
suggest blowing it all away and reinstalling the needed packages.  Make
sure you let setup select the packages it thinks are needed, and don't
unselect them, even if you think you won't use them.

For X11, you'll need the various xorg-x11-* packages -- you'll have better
luck asking X11-specific questions on the cygwin-xfree list.
