Just a side note:

I don't know about Mac, but I'm using a USB stick with a NTFS partition
on my Ubuntu 9 Linux system, and I've used Linux ext2 filesystems on
Windows 2000 and XP for years with a free 3rd party driver.
No problems in either case (but I must say I never need to worry
about permissions, I'm the only user on that system).
