Lesson on internals; what associates /

It's time for a lesson in cygwin internals.

What associates the root of a filesystem??

I'm getting an invalid value for "/". i.e. When I do a "cd /", it will fail. I will get the error message: "cd: / - No such file or directory". Obviously there is something in the environment it doesn't like. The current directory is at what the new root *should* be. I'm running the latest Cygwin 1.7.1-1
