Trouble is that there is no newlib change at all in this timeframe.

Even if it's hard to believe that your compiler warning fix for regex is
the cause, it seems that it uncovered a problem lurking in this new
regex implementation all the time.

Here's another report:
Marco, can you please participate in that thread so we can discuss
this problem in a single spot?
