I choose not to clobber the Start Menu (while installing) ...

 - started login shell (either using MinTTY or a DOSbox)
 - invoked startxwin
   (which is the same as starting the server from the Start Menu)

Had to fiddle w/ the notification area (tray) before the required icons appeared.

Next proceeded as you instructed above.

Result: grep complains ("grep: Write error: Broken pipe").

Problem confirmed.
