Using -t {rtf,sgml,tex,mif} selects the backend for Jade to use.
Using -V {tex,mif,rtf}-backend enables certain backend-specific features.
You can use the former without the latter, but not vice-versa.
(In other words, -t rtf -V tex-backend would be a really bad idea.)
