I use Jade and the DSSSL Modular style sheets. Works pretty well for HTML
and RTF, although most of the documents I write are shorter than what you
describe.
I don't routinely produce PDF from SGML; I've made a couple of desultory
attempts to get PDFJadeTeX running, and not had much success. But PDF from
RTF via Adobe Exchange works OK if you're not too concerned about making it
"rich" (hyperlinks etc).
