In:
<xsl:apply-templates/>
The XSLT processor is interpreting the as a
simple line feed *in the stylesheet*, not as literal
output. So it is treated as whitespace in the
stylesheet and ignored.
Enclose it in xsl:text to output it:
<xsl:apply-templates/><xsl:text> </xsl:text>
