Yes, I was originally asking about macro-like text substitution.

Yes, I only found Norm's xmlunicode.el earlier this week.  Again, this
is not DocBook-specific, but I do a lot of work over SSH, using emacs
in console mode on the Windows SSH client from SSH.com.  I get special
characters displayed as '?'---is this likely to be a font issue on the
Windows side?
