Thank you very much indeed for your answer and for making me realize that
the problem was with the EPS file. (I don't have much experience of them as
you have guessed.)
The EPS was created with StarOffice 5.1 (Windows), and I _had_ looked at it
in a file editor and found the string "%%BoundingBox: 0 0 85 85" in it, so I
thought it was OK.
But the problem apparently was that it was created with "EPS Export Options"
(which I thought sounded compatible and good) rather than "no Preview".
Apparently LaTeX doesn't like the resulting junk in front of the file
header.
I have now removed the junk (the preview) and everything works like a charm.
No error messages. Great!
