- Subject: [docbook] Docbook combined with a website
Hello all,
I need a documentation framework and I'm not sure whether I should use
docbook. This is my scenario:
I have scientific articles which needs to be accessible like they were plain
html files on a website, with a custom menu of links listing them by
category. The articles are woven into the website, with sidebar and so forth.
Meanwhile I would like to have the ability to export this set of articles to
a PDF for download - all the articles compiled into a book, where each
category is a chapter(plus foreword etc.)
The articles are of varying complexity - ranging from scientific articles with
footnotes and reference sections, to a couple of paragraphs of text. The
article module seem to suit my needs.
Is it possible to use such an combination? Several articles into one book?
I'm not sure how to achieve integration and modularization, especially with
respect to the website: The articles must be able to be linked from each
others, as well as from the menu - each link, be it the menu or an article,
should have the title defined in the article. When adding new articles and
modifying existing, I only want to modify one file. Any ideas, suggestions
how to solve this?
Is it possible to simply view the docbook files of the web, or do they need to
be processed first? (can they be viewed as they are in a browser, or do they
need to be exported into a viewing format)
Is XML Schemas not used for docbook because the standard isn't finished yet?
Because XML/XML Schemas are superior over DTD/SGML in general, right?
Docbook appears to me quite complex, with a high learning threshold. I am
comfortable with the various XML standards and DTDs. Is there some specific
documentation for what I am trying to achieve or do I have to read the whole
book?
Any suggestions, ideas, or specific pointers to documentation is highly
appreciated.
Cheers,
Frans
