I plan to ask people on the DJGPP developers' list to try the pretest,
once I make sure it builds for me without problems.

IMHO, the official releases and semi-official pretests still have an
important role: they force the developers to try to put out a stable
distribution.  In contrast, grave bugs that are found in the CVS tree
can always be dismissed on the grounds that development sources are by
definition unstable.

Users who want reliable tools (as opposed to hackers who want to hack
;-) will not be happy with packages whose distribution is based solely
on CVS.  IMHO, of course.
