Note: the test script 'empty.exp' needs some more work.
It sets variables named 'decimal' and 'hex', which are actually
global variables provided by runtest.exp. Setting them to my
favorite values gives 100+ spurious fails in other test scripts,
starting with gdb.base/maint.exp.
