Relocation error in gdb

I'm trying to run a debug version of the standard libraries in gdb.
They are located in /usr/lib/debug. After loading gdb ("gdb rssd"), I
do this:
LD_PRELOAD /usr/lib/debug/libc.so.6
in an attempt to force the program (some odbc libraries in the program,
in particular) to pick up the debug versions. I receive this error:

/lib/tls/libpthread.so.0: symbol errno, version GLIBC_PRIVATE not
defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference
Can anyone decipher this? Here is the backtrace I'm trying to nail
