gdb segfault

I am trying to debug a segfault with an app... So I built the app with
debugging enabled, and tried to run gdb - but now gdb is segfaulting.
System:
Debian Etch, 64 bit
gdb:
dionysus:/usr/src/mythtv.svn/mythtv-0.20.2# gdb --version
GNU gdb 6.4.90-debian
This GDB was configured as "x86_64-linux-gnu".
app:
Mythtv 0.20.2, specifically mythtv-setup, as per instructions here:
http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-22.html#ss22.2
I know this isn't much to go on, but I am hoping wiser and more
experienced heads can provide guidance....
