Nope, your patch is wrong. x is the value we want to compute square root of
and it certainly doesn't need to be in the [1, 4) interval.
You either want to write:
* find an integer k such that 1 <= (y=x*2^(-2k)) < 4, then
* sqrt(x) = 2^k * sqrt(y)
or
* find an integer k such that 1 <= (y=x*2^(2k)) < 4, then
* sqrt(x) = 2^(-k) * sqrt(y)
