I agree. It's not particularly useful in any case.

Agree with this as well. I used to do things this way, before using
autoconf. Then I never bothered to figure out how you do it with
an autoconf package. So it would be nice if you did this.
The only question is whether or not we have to change
various directives "#include <---.h>" to "#include <gsl/---.h>",
which I actually kinda like anyway.
