I strongly disagree--compatibility with MATLAB is the major advantage
of Octave w.r.t. SciLab, RLab, etc.
I regularly share Octave code with people using MATLAB, and I would
think that I am not the only one.  The language might be less than
ideal, but it has been used by many people and is a de-facto
standard.

One of the reasons I like Guile is the use of a standard language.

Don't we have enough little (and not so little) languages?
