cannot start guile

I've just compiled and installed guile-1.3 on an SGI Origin 200 compiled
with gcc-2.8.1.  When I try to run guile, I get:

   ERROR: In procedure struct-ref:
   ERROR: Wrong type argument in position 2: 5.0

Could someone please explain the above and a possible solution.
